FACT: YOUR TERPENES ARE IN DANGER

Nobody wants dried-out or lifeless-smelling herbs.
If the material dries out too much, the intense aromas, full fragrance and natural quality are quickly lost.

Only Boveda 's original Terpene Shield reliably protects your herbs – for consistent quality and freshness.
The Terpene Shields protect the delicate trichomes from drying out and damage, so that terpenes and valuable plant substances stay exactly where they belong – until you use them.

The ideal relative humidity (RH) for storing herbs

Boveda Wirkung Grafik

For herbs, the ideal range of relative humidity (RH) is between 58% and 62% .
A stable climate in this area protects against drying out, mold growth, trichome damage and loss of aroma .

Boveda Terpene Shields are available in two RH variants: 58% and 62% .
Both ensure that the optimal microclimate is automatically established in your container.

  • 58% RH is particularly suitable for more humid environments or if you prefer your herbs to be a little drier.
  • 62% RH is ideal for drier regions or if you like to store your herbs aromatically fresh.

This protects terpenes, essential oils and plant substances – and your herbs retain their natural quality for a long time.

HOW DOES MOISTURE AFFECT YOUR HERBS?

There are many factors to consider when drying and storing herbs correctly. One of the most important is controlling the relative humidity (RH) in the airtight container.
If the humidity is too high, the risk of mold or mildew growth increases. If it is too low, the trichomes dry out , become brittle, and lose their quality. Over time, the essential oils, which carry the valuable plant compounds and terpenes, degrade – the natural aroma, fragrance, and effectiveness are lost.

If you're wondering how to optimally regulate the humidity when storing your herbs, there's a simple solution that eliminates the need for constant measuring and readjusting.
The ideal humidity range for storing herbs is between 55% and 65% relative humidity – according to international ASTM standards.

WHAT IS AMBIENT HUMIDITY?

Ambient humidity describes the humidity outside your storage container – for example, in a room, basement, or storage room.
In air-conditioned rooms, the humidity is often between 20 and 30% , as air conditioners remove moisture from the air. In heated rooms, it can be even lower because heating systems also dry out the ambient air considerably.

Even briefly opening a container can cause the plant material to lose a measurable amount of moisture. Without a method to regulate humidity, herbs will dry out over time and lose quality.

Moisture-regulating products like Boveda 62% can help.
These small bags automatically balance the moisture level in the container by absorbing or releasing moisture until the ideal level is reached again.
This way, the herbs retain their original quality – stable, fresh and natural.
Some even say that well-stored herbs mature like a good wine or a cigar.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL HUMIDITY FOR STORING HERBS?

Boveda 62% moisture regulators keep the moisture content constant at an optimal level.
Repeated tests and laboratory analyses have confirmed that a range of 59–63% RH is ideal for preserving herbs in their natural state.

An independent laboratory study conducted a so-called moisture sorption isotherm test. This test determines the humidity range within which plant material remains stable without changing in structure or composition. The result: 59–63% RH is optimal for safe, gentle storage.

The basis of this technology lies in natural salt regulation : different salt compounds retain different amounts of moisture. Boveda uses a special salt blend that creates a stable balance at precisely 62% RH .

Some users prefer slightly lower values – around 54% RH , depending on plant density or desired degree of dryness.
The advantage: Boveda adapts automatically – if the humidity in the container is above ideal, the bag absorbs moisture; if it is too low, it releases it again.

HOW DOES HUMIDITY AFFECT THE DRYING, CURING AND STORING OF HERBS?

For optimal durability and consistent quality, a stable relative humidity within the ideal range is crucial.
The external environment plays a subordinate role, as Boveda works actively inside the container – absorbing or releasing moisture to maintain the optimal climate.

Furthermore, temperature and light are crucial factors.
Herbs should always be stored in a cool, dark place to protect their delicate plant compounds. High temperatures can alter or break down these compounds.
With a Boveda pad in the container, the internal climate remains stable – regardless of what is happening outside.

While Boveda takes care of the moisture balance, herbs should still be dried using tried and tested methods first.
Once the plant material has reached the desired moisture level, the Boveda pack ensures that this level is maintained optimally. Should the material accidentally dry out too much, Boveda can gently restore the moisture – and bring the herbs back to their ideal condition.

CONCLUSION

Controlled humidity is key to the quality of your herbs.
With Boveda Terpene Shields and moisture regulators, your plant material stays permanently fresh, aromatic and stable – without constant measuring or risk of over- or under-drying.

Perfect climate. Consistent quality. As natural as the first day.
